ABOUT US

Babyn Yar Memorial Alliance is a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was formed in response to the damage caused to the memorial site during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Babyn Yar Holocaust memorial site is a place of immense historical significance. It is the site of one of the largest mass killings of Jews during the Holocaust, when over 33,000 people were murdered in a single day. The site has been a place of pilgrimage for Holocaust survivors and their families for decades, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the Holocaust in Ukraine, 1.5 million Jews were exterminated.  The foundation is dedicated to preserving and commemorating the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and to rebuilding and modernizing the memorial site.

Babyn Yar Memorial Alliance is committed to preserving and commemorating the Babyn Yar Holocaust memorial site, and to creating new educational programs about the Holocaust. We also believe that it is essential to fight against all forms of intolerance and discrimination, and to build a more just and equitable world.

Key Initiatives

• The vast majority of all who perished in the ravine are still buried below. The foundation will honor their lives with a dignified and respectful memorial

• Building alliances with other leading Holocaust museums such as Yad Vashem and the national Holocaust memorial museum in Washington DC . It also leverages off other existing Jewish organizations to provide information and historical perspective to the events which occurred during the Nazi occupation of Kyiv, and provide a permanent space for the 10,000 items that are still in existence, and which symbolize the horrific events which took place at Babyn Yar

• Restoring the memorial site to modernize and and repair damage to the Babyn Yar Holocaust memorial site caused by years of neglect and damage caused by the Russian military

• Highlighting and maintaining evidence of stories and histories of Jewish life more comprehensively in Ukraine, including in the centuries before and after the Holocaust.

• Restoring and revitalizing Jewish sites across Ukraine.  There are dozens of synagogues, cemeteries, former Jewish neighborhoods, and other cultural and historical landmarks which degraded under decades of Soviet neglect and have been further damaged by Russia’s war of aggression.

• Leveraging international research institutes and experts to catalogue and unify these disparate archives and research under one umbrella, thereby facilitating the study and memorialization of Jewish culture in Ukraine.

• Creating new educational programs about the Holocaust in Ukraine

• Educating and inspiring people about the Holocaust, and the importance of fighting against all forms of intolerance and violence. We will create educational programs and materials that teach people about the dangers of intolerance and violence. We will also work to support organizations that are working to fight against these evils.

•Providing financial and logistical support to Jewish communities in Ukraine. This includes providing food, shelter, and medical care to those in need during the current humanitarian crisis.  This is especially important during the current Russian war on Ukraine
